We do not recommend hiking without guide books or a good map. We carried along two books. This one was sent to us for free via mail from the tourist organisation PromoTurismoFVG. Unfortunately it is not helpful and lacks the information needed to orient ourselves. The inclosed map is horribly inadequate, so it was more of a burden than help.
